At 8:30 p.m. on the closing night of their two-day stand in Indianapolis, Umphrey’s McGee took the stage for what would become nearly three hours of memorizing instrumentals, psychedelic guitar features, and pleasantly choppy rock. Easily categorized as a jam band and seemingly determined to break that mold, Umphrey’s continuously deliver more than just funky beats for hippies to swirl in circles to. It is their integration of unlikely hard rock elements (rigid beats, short and accented guitar riffs, in-your-face lyrics) that define the unique sound of our neighbors from Chicago and set them apart from other groove bands.
