Tycho is the musical manifestation of San Francisco based artist Scott Hansen. Scott creates beautiful, atmospheric instrumental landscapes that remind you of looking at a sunrise as you roll down the highway with your hand out the window feeling the air rushing by.
Scott was also known as ISO50, under that name he developed as a visual artist and eventually began creating music that represents his visual style. Scott has moved on from ISO50 into Tycho being a full time gig, where he is not only the musician but he creates all of the album artwork and even the posters for the shows.
Tycho has evolved from a solo project with a sampled style of music compared to Boards of Canada or DJ Shadow into something that feels like an ambient instrumental version of M83 or El Ten Eleven. The evolution from solo artist to a full live band seemed to be an organic process much like his visual work. Dubstep fans around the world can’t get enough of Canadian-born bass-fiend Troy Beetles, better known by his DJ/producer name, Datsik. Despite the 26-year-old’s young age, the last five years of his career have solidified his status as a leading contributor to dubstep and bass music. The list of today’s top acts Datsik hasn’t worked with is dwindling in numbers and seals the legitimacy of the forward-thinking, hardworking artist.

As we approach the 50th anniversary of the formation of The Grateful Dead, many deadheads and music lovers alike have been coming together to remember their favorite jam band of all time. Having booked the “Fare The Well” shows in Chicago, the fear of possibly never hearing those sweet tunes in person again has become ever more of a reality for many.
The connection between music and the human soul is a story as old as time itself. The universal connection is something that binds people and their relationships with each other, so to say that music influences our lives is an understatement.
Though they are considered a cover band, Dark Star Orchestra (DSO) looks to bend the mold, change the circumstances and be more than just a cover band. Many loyal followers of the music have tried, from day one, to pursue their dreams of covering their favorite band of all time. However none are as acclaimed or accredited as Dark Star Orchestra.
DSO is known for performing shows based on the original set lists of actual Grateful Dead concerts, citing the date and venue at the end of their performance. For steadfast fans, this is a fun opportunity to discover a new favorite Grateful Dead show they might not have known about.
Dark Star Orchestra doesn’t just play the specific set list though; they cater each and every show specifically to the era in which they are recreating. From changing their arrangement to musical structure and even instruments, accuracy is a highly-regarded element of every performance.
DSO is also known for the fact that five members of the original Grateful Dead have occasionally sat in on their shows throughout their nearly 15 years and over 2,200 shows on the road. Band members include Rob Eaton on rhythm guitar and vocals, Dino English and Rob Koritz on drums, Skip Vangelas on bass, Lisa Mackey on vocals, Rob Barraco on keyboards and vocals, and Jeff Mattson on lead guitar.

This week’s Altered Thurzday can easily be considered the biggest show in it’s history. One of the pioneers of the Dubstep sound is coming from here from the land where Cockney Thugs roam. That’s right! Caspa has decided embark on a special journey through smaller venues in the states to give his fans a more intimate and personal experience. Here is how he describes it:
"Having released and performed in almost every corner of the globe, Caspa is identified as an innovator in all areas of bass music, from producing and DJing to sourcing new talent for his own Dub Police and Sub Soldiers imprint. We all know music should be about vibes and feelings, not glitz and glamour - which can be easily forgotten and usually is. Its now time to strip away the hype and facade and to remind us what its really about. Picture a dark, underground space, an intimate gathering in the company of the most dedicated bass-heads. The fans who truly love and crave the simplicity of an original underground, London rave - dimly lit by a single red light and free from any over-the-top gimmicks. Sounds a bit like a place some of us know very well, am I right? Caspa decided not to rely on the venue for sound (probably a wise idea), but instead bring his own and PK Sound at that! The Mousetrap has never seen such a system before and I pray for it’s foundation.
Caspa AKA Gary McCann is a dubstep producer from west London. McCann’s creative involvement in music began after a promising basketball career was cut short by a shoulder injury. Growing up, McCann cites Jungle and Hip Hop as his main influences. He received his first public attention when, his first track, Bassbins recorded under the pseudonym Quiet Storm, was picked up by BBC Radio 1Xtra’s DJ Da Flex.
McCann has started his own label, which focuses on Dubstep and Grime artists. Storming Productions was founded in 2004 and then he joined Stingray Records in 2006. Around this time, he also began his own radio show on RinseFM. McCann also created an additional label Dub Police to focus specifically on Dubstep. Dub Police is composed of Rusko, L-Wiz, N-Type, The Others and more.
He has performed at a number of high-profile UK music festivals, including Glastonbury and Global Gathering and his release Back for the First Time has received widespread public attention, being playlisted on BBC Radio 1. He has also performed at many other notable festivals around the world such as Exit Festival in Serbia, Stereosonic in Australia and Lollapalooza in the U.S. Despite his widespread success, McCann still finds time to perform every two months at the renowned Fabric in his hometown of London.
His debut album Everybody’s Talking, Nobody’s Listening (album) was released on 4 May 2009 on Caspa’s own label Sub Soldiers/Fabric Records and included an appearance from legendary reggae figure Sir David ‘Ram Jam’ Rodigan.
In August 2012, it was announced that Caspa and various notable electronic music producers would be featured on the Halo 4 remix album and “War” was featured in the trailer for Kick-Ass 2. In 2014, McCann moved to Denver, Colorado. He cites Denver’s music culture and friendly people as influential factors, although he is unsure whether the move will be permanent. – Wikipedia
Among the ever-expanding landscape of Dubstep, Alex Crawford (known musically as The Others) has crafted his own distinct style and shaped up what promises to be a successful 2014. Having released his debut artist album and conquered music venues worldwide, the future will see him focus on producing his niche blend of classic Dubstep creation.
During 2013 The Others had a range of successes, reaching from one of the biggest Dubstep singles of the year to delving into a deeper, darker style of production, gaining support from original scene tastemakers such as Caspa, Youngsta and Skream, giving a huge nod to the roots of Dubstep. Having released his debut artist album at the very end of 2012 with features from Emalkay, Joker, Stamina MC, Breakage, Lonette Charles and Geoff Smith, the following year was dedicated to the promotion of Red Planet’s impressive singles. Standout single ‘Fallout’ with Emalkay gained recognition from all corners of electronic music, with continued support from Radio stations such as Radio 1, Kiss FM, XFM, a nomination for a Bass Music Award and a feature from key Dubstep YouTube channel UKF. His inclusion in all sections of Dub Police’s Past Present Future compilation cemented his reputation as a bass music artist with longevity.
Dubstep fans will of course recognise The Others’ early production from Caspa and Rusko’s seminal FabricLive 37 mix. The special VIP mix of Africa became both a Dubstep anthem and a calling card for Alex’s skilful production. The Others (as a production duo) were soon snapped up by Caspa for his record label Dub Police, where Alex Crawford remains as an artist today (retaining the moniker The Others), racking up an incredible 23 releases – making him the most released and longest-standing artist on the entire label. Releases such as the Gravity EP and First Flight EP on Dub Police ensured he had earned his place among Dubstep’s elite. The Others has also found success with other respectable bass music labels including Sub Soldiers, Tempa, Ringo, Boka and Wheel & Deal records.
As well as a fantastic track record in producing, The Others is a more than accomplished DJ, being invited to play at some of the most prestigious venues worldwide. He has been a constant fixture at the Dub Police fabric residency in his hometown of London, and played key venues in the city like Pacha, Plastic People (FWD), Ministry of Sound and Matter. The Others has been invited to DJ at parties across the globe, including an impressive six US tours, both solo and group expeditions with label mates from Dub Police. He has performed at prestigious parties and venues such as Smog at The House of Blues in LA, South by Southwest in Texas, World Music Conference Miami and Beta in Denver for Sub.mission. Australasia was also graced with his musical skill during a Ministry of Sound tour of Australia and New Zealand in 2011, and Europe has been a staple destination with performances at Tomorrowland Festival, Outlook Festival, Paradiso in Amsterdam, Trix in Antwerp, The Villa in Oslo, Rex in Paris, and more. He was also part of the first ever Dubstep night in Ibiza, at Eden.
Fuelled by his constant creative output, The Others has received continued radio support from stations such as BBC Radio 1, XFM, Rinse FM and Kiss FM. He was an original member of the BBC 1xtra Daily Dose of Dubstep artists. All of these stations have invited Alex to play music on air, with Mistajam proclaiming his track Gravity and his First Flight EP ‘Jam Hot’.
His discography also hosts a very impressive catalogue of remixes including Above & Beyond, Breakage (with Newham Generals & David Rodigan), Caspa, Emalkay, Maroon 5 (with Wiz Khalifa), Reflekt, S.P.Y and Youngman & Skream.
2014 will see The Others continue to develop his musical creativity and delve into the deeper sound of Dubstep. He will remain focused on his DJ performances and spend another year travelling the globe, sharing his sound, and this will also be the year of Alex working alongside the label as an A&R to sign the next generation of artists. He is the next in line to mix Dub Police’s prestigious MyStyle compilation series. Add this to a host of exciting projects and planned collaborations, and 2014 will mean massive things to come for The Others.

I got the chance to talk with Russel Jones of Ultra Violet Hippopotamus about their upcoming show this weekend at the Vogue in Indianapolis, Indiana. This will be their last show before taking a hiatus this winter, and they are more then excited to be celebrating it here in Indianapolis with all of their friends and family. This is sure to be a special show!
Mojo: Saturday Night at the Vogue will be a three set show, will we be seeing any horn section?
Russ (UV Hippo): “Unfortunately, No. We are not going to have the horns with us, but we are still finalizing some of the details on a few surprises for you guys. The horn section is definitely something we want to continue in the future. When we come back we’d like to look into doing a whole tour with the horns.”
Mojo: Well it’s good to hear you talking about the future. A lot of people have been worried that this hiatus would lead to something more permanent.”
Russ (UV Hippo): “Yeah hiatus can be one of those words that people read into a little bit too much. We have been discussing taking a break for a while, but we didn’t want to have to announce anything. The whole plan was just to wind things back so we could focus on writing and progressing the music. We didn’t want to make an announcement and freak everyone out, but we wanted to answer any rumors going around about what was happening. We have all been itching to progress our music beyond a certain point, but we haven’t been able to allow ourselves to do so because of the amount of time we have been spending on the road. We really want to write a new album with an approach we have never had before, and it’s going to take time to develop something great.”
Mojo: “So at the end of this hiatus we should expect a new album?”
Russ (UV Hippo): “Yes there will be a new album. We are going to just take a break from each other in December and the beginning of January. We are going to get back together in January and just keep writing and finalizing some of the ideas we have going and progress things from there. There’s no strict time line on things because we want to allow ourselves to go through a creative process.”
Mojo: “Why did you guys pick Indianapolis for your last show, you are all from Michigan, so what made you choose Indy?”
Russ (UV Hippo): “Well our home base as of right now is Grand Rapids, Michigan, but Indianapolis and really Indiana in general, is one of the main reasons we have been able to do all that we do. We have made such good friends anywhere in Indiana that w have played and they have played such a big part in making us feel like yeah, we can do this. Indiana is one of those where bands go and they know a crowd will show up rain or shine because they want a good show and they appreciate good musicians.”
Mojo: “Last questions, there is a post on the World Wide Hippo Crew Facebook page about a crowd theme for Saturday’s show. I think the front runner is Ashton’s Closet. Do you have a vote?”
Russ (UV Hippo): “Ashton’s closet sounds great to me, just as long as he dresses the band too”

Mousetrap Bar & Grille
This past Tuesday, Mexican acoustic guitar duo Rodrigo Y Gabriela took the stage of the Egyptian Room at the Old National Center. Performing in Indy for their first time in four years, Rodrigo Y Gabriela is currently on tour in support of their newest album “9 Dead Alive.” The sound of Rodrigo Y Gabriela is one that is very difficult to describe, with expertly mixed elements of rock, flamenco and jazz. With just the two of them on stage, they blend the sounds of their individual guitars in ways that sound like a full band is present.
Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero grew up together in Mexico where, meeting as teenagers, they began a journey of playing music together that spans over 25 years. Their roots can be seen in covers of Metallica and Led Zeppelin, music that drew them in as kids. They mastered covers to play to tourists, but eventually decided it was time to move. They headed to Dublin, Ireland and as street performers they caught the attention of Damien Rice who helped the duo get a manager and begin booking shows.
What is most notably important about Rodrigo Y Gabriela is their unique style of playing music. With roots in megadeath and rock, they wanted to create a sound that felt like a full band was performing, while keeping their talent to just the two of them.
What stands out as most unique and expressive is the way that Gabriela plays her guitar, not as just a string instrument but also as a percussion instrument. Extremely tight and fast hand movements allow her to simultaneously strum the guitar while plucking at its wooden walls with her fingers, generating a popping sound like a drum. This, when paired with Rodrigo’s intricate guitar playing makes them sound much fuller, richer in sound.
When Rodrigo Y Gabriela took the stage at the Egyptian Room, everybody’s faces lit up. They were last in town about four years ago to play the Vogue and, from what I hear, that show was amazing, but nothing compares to the acoustics at the Egyptian Room. Their sound was so full and unyielding for just two performers.
Scanning the crowd, I noticed that hardly anybody was dancing, but rather standing with their mouth open in complete awe at the skill of these two performers. At several points throughout the show they stopped to talk to the audience, telling us about the tour they have been on and discussing the music they were playing. At the end Gabriela joked about how she has never had time to record lessons on her unique style of playing, something she wished she had the time to do. That being said, she then gave us all a quick demo on one of her signature moves.
At the end of the show, the overall feel from the crowd was much different from any other show I have been too. People often exit with some kind of discontent because the band was off or they didn’t play a favorite song or they played too short of a set. This time, there was nothing but smiles for miles from every fan in attendance, and with good cause.
Though Rodrigo Y Gabriela may not have as big of a US following as they should, their sound is never underappreciated. Considering the duo can fill 50,000 person-capacity soccer stadiums in Mexico, the Wembley arena in London and the Hollywood Bowl in LA, getting the chance to be five rows from the stage in our very own Egyptian Room was a very humbling experience. I certainly hope to catch them again in the near future.
IndyMojo’s #SpookStaff moseyed down to Nightmare on Edgewood last Saturday evening, and they left feeling eerily elated, and satisfied. Consistently ranked one of Indy’s premier haunts, if not the top-dog, NOEW offers a smattering of freaky frights that will probably hit home with even the bravest soul. Ranging from demented clowns to cannibal butchers, this haunt promises certain fright to anyone who enters.
Situated on the grounds of an athletic compound, this haunt boasts several different components throughout the set-up. This writer can’t give it all away, because the surprise is half the fun, but a few juicy tidbits will be shared. Sections are aptly titled anxiety-inducing names like “Pandemonium”, “Hysteria”, “Old School Fright”, “Schizophrenia”, and “The Last Ride”. Each different portion of the haunt is unique, and each one has its own distinct frightening element. However, one theme remains constant throughout the experience: the scarers can touch.
Not only can the scarers at this particular haunt touch you, but they can also poke you with their machetes, run forks across your throat, and shove you into walls. After experiencing this, this writer will never go to another house where they CAN’T touch you. Its friggin’ awesome. It adds a completely new element to the scare when someone pops out of nowhere and grabs your shoulders. All illusions of safety go out the window, and the sensory scaring begins.
Winding through pitch black mazes, avoiding killers reminscient of “The Purge”, and being caressed by Freddy Kreuger are among many of the memorable events from NOEW. This haunted house is a beastly one, and probably not the best pick for those that are faint of heart. Here’s what the rest of IndyMojo’s #SpookStaff had to say about it:
Nightmare on Edgewood has done it again! This haunt stands out due to the pure terror of being touched while winding through the twists and turns of its wicked attractions. Edgewood consistently reinvents their ghoulish sets and employ actors who truly love the thrill of scaring the guts out of people. My favorite was a room that everyone was shut in to and nobody truly knew what was going on. - Gwen
I liked that at Nightmare on Edgewood patrons were turned around in the haunt, as well as had to crawl through a portion of it. They were also able to touch us, which made things seem realistic. No one was safe – whether they were in the front or in the back! - Dan
Old School Fright was the clear winner for me at Edgewood this year. The addition of multiple new scenes and rooms, as well as elaborate new lighting effects, took the production to a whole new level. The monsters inside of Old School Fright were especially touchy, which left me paralyzed in hysterical laughter as I repeatedly brushed away Freddie’s metal claws and worked to escape the clutches of a curiously friendly psychopath who wandered with our group for a significant amount of time. - Danielle

On the heels of losing founding member David Murphy, nationally renowned electronic jam band STS9 (Sound Tribe Sector 9) sets forth on its first full tour in almost a year. The tour opener is set to take place in our very own Egyptian Room at the Old National Center on Oct. 9th 2014 at 8PM.
When founding member and bassist David Murphy announced his permanent departure from the band, STS9 canceled their winter tour and circled the horses. After what we can only assume was a necessary, but planned break, STS9 formally invited Alana Rocklin to replace Murphy as lead bassist.
Her first appearance took place at the McDowell Mountain Music Festival where they debuted two new songs “New Dawn, New Day” and “World Go Round.” Fans seem to love the new addition and reinvigorated spirit STS9 now has and life begins to flow back into songs that previously seemed dead.
Worth noting is that this was not the first time Rocklin performed with STS9; she sat in on December 28th during the band’s 2013 NYE run at the Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA. Rocklin has previously worked with singer-songwriter Ben Sollee, as well as Jim James and his solo band.
Many fans are very excited to see where this new spirit, style and line-up will take the band as they embark on this tour. In previous shows, the band has had a style that lent itself to be much darker, exploring the depths of jam-rock “spaceyness.” Word on the street is the new STS9 is much more funky, less spacey and more of a dance party. I know I speak for many die-hard fans when I say that this show cannot come fast enough.
The last time STS9 was in Indy was around this time last year, but they opened for Umphrey’s McGee and their show took place while the sun was still up. The band is said to be featuring the biggest lighting rig ever, guaranteeing that they set a precedent for what to expect over the next few months of touring.
