Take A Trip Through Shpongle’s Museum of Consciousness

shpongle 4shpongleIn today’s world of abundant electronic music and DJs, silly monikers and outlandish stage gimmicks are commonplace. Faced with the challenge of differentiating in an over-saturated market, it’s quicker and easier to put on a costume or buy speakers with obnoxious watts than it is to perfect the craft and create an all-encompassing experience.

Anyone who has ever been to a Shpongle show knows this isn’t the case with the remarkable psychedelic downtempo duo. Donning his famous feathered fedora, Simon Postford holds down production, instrumentation and programming while Raja Ram plays flute and occupies the peculiar role of “cunning linguist.”

Shpongle’s current Museum of Consciousness Tour kicked off on February 16th in Asheville, NC and has been at it nonstop since then, playing shows nearly every night of the week and traveling to all corners of The US. This Thursday March 27th, they’re making their only stop in Indiana at The Lafayette Theater.

Shpongle’s psybient music is atmospheric and enveloping- minimal and ambient at times, heavy and pulsating at others. If you’ve never experienced what it’s like to feel music, it’s possible that Shpongle live could change your life.

More than just a DJ set, Shpongle is a sensory smorgasbord. Notorious for performing from inside of a large contraption called The Shpongletron, 3D video mapping and vibrant colored lights bring the DJ set to life once the music starts to play. Currently touring with the third generation of Shpongletrons, this one in particular includes surfaces that are similar to, but different from, mirrors..

“Now we have surfaces that we can bounce light off of, as well as surfaces we can stick light to, as well as surfaces that make their own light, so there’s a lot more ingredients,” says Peter “Zebb” Berdovsky, the mastermind behind the project.

The psychedelic visuals for the 21 foot-wide Shpongletron were conceptualized and fabricated by Boston-based Zebbler Studios whose mission is “to explore the edge where art and technology collide, to unravel the joyful and unexpected beauty of art in motion.” You may have seen Zebb’s work previously at Lotus and EOTO shows.
