Over the last few years, Action Jackson has made quite a name for himself as one of the city’s most active DJ’s. Whether he’s running his weekly OMG! underground dance party at The Casba, spinning at The Lockerbie on the first Tuesday of the new month, opening for a major DJ passing through town, or working on new productions in the studio- Action Jackson manages to keep himself busy on the regular.
What a lot of people may not know, however, is that he’s also one of two founding members of Rad Summer- a promotions company and (now) record label currently based in Indianapolis and Philadelphia. Rad Summer was born in Bloomington in 2007- first as the title of co-owner Michael Lasday’s summer tour, then as the title of the company. When the two graduated and took root in their new cities, they continued to co-manage the brand remotely- mainly producing events, but also dropping periodic releases.
A recent decision to expand Rad Summer to also function as a record label has prompted a string of new and exciting changes, including the integration of Heavy Gun manager JP Gold, who details his decision to focus on Rad Summer by explaining his excitement to focus on electronic music. “Where Heavy Gun is primarily centered on hip-hop, Rad Summer will be a multi-genre label that blurs the line between hip-hop and dance music. We’ve got everything from a dubstep EP from up-and-coming producer Figure to Oreo’s debut LP in the works.”
The Rad Summer release schedule already features upcoming projects from Action Jackson, Dave Owen, Figure, Flufftronix, Lemi Vice, Oreo Jones, and Scott Matelic. Rad Summer’s first release (Action Jackson’s When The Night Falls EP) is currently available on Beatport and iTunes, as well as their second release- Lemi Vice’s Lemon’s / Let’s All Fall In Love.
Here’s an Indy Mojo exclusive stream from Oreo Jones’ upcoming Rad Summer release:
In celebration of the label launch, Rad Summer is taking over Rock Lobster on Saturday July 23rd to showcase the label’s artists. The day’s events will run from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. with DJ sets from the Rad Summer crew and a live performance from Oreo Jones. Furthermore, Rad Summer and Dope Couture will be unveiling their limited edition collaboration tank tops and new Rad Summer merchandise (including T-shirts, stickers, buttons, and CDs).
In case that’s not enough to keep you busy, The Savvy Bazaar will also be in full swing. “It’s an art fair that was started by Savvy Salon owner Katie Jones a few summers ago,” Gold explained when I asked what that meant. He continued, “Katie would close her salon and bring in designers, artists, and DJs. She’s now in Brooklyn, but people still miss her events. So we asked if she would help us organize something similar to go along with the launch party. Stitch Sisters and few others will be on hand selling their merchandise.”
And because the folks at Rad Summer work (and play) hard, they’ve arranged for your favorite Indianapolis food trucks to be on-site serving up munchies all day.
Whatever your Saturday night plans entail, you’ve got no excuse to miss this early, daytime festival showcasing some of the best talent on Indy’s newest record label. Shop, eat, and jam all in one location with some of the coolest emcees, DJs, and producers in the city… all that for just $3.
