Recently a headline caught my attention.
“Brazilian Prime Minister prescribes sex.”
The article briefly states that sex is a good form of exercise, which will help regulate high blood pressure, which apparently is epidemic in Brazil. So this got me thinking what are some other benefits of sex, in a health aspect of course.
Frequent intercourse has been shown to help with stress levels. Actually it helps people cope with stress better, which is amazing due to the unrelenting amount of stress in current society. Definition of frequent sex wasn’t given in the study, but I am sure you can figure that out.
Sex will increase your immunity, and keep you from getting sick as often. Sex once or twice a week has shown to increase an important part of your immune system, immunoglobulin A. It just gets better.
Burning calories is a no brainer, but having sex will help burn extra calories and increase endurance.
Preventing heart attacks is another attribute of sex. Studies show that having sex twice a week or more will decrease the risk of a fatal heart attack by 50%. Also shown in the cardiovascular area is that having sex will decrease the chance of strokes as well.
Feeling down about yourself, have sex. Sex helps to raise peoples self-esteem, which has been shown to be a major reason people engage in sex. Even if your not feeling down, sex will make your feel even better about yourself and self-image.
Having sex and orgasms increases levels of the hormone oxytocin, the so-called love hormone, which helps us bond and build trust. Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh and the University of North Carolina evaluated 59 premenopausal women before and after warm contact with their husbands and partners ending with hugs. They found that the more contact, the higher the oxytocin levels.
Higher oxytocin has also been linked with a feeling of generosity. So if you’re feeling suddenly more generous toward your partner than usual, credit the love hormone.
Sex will decrease pain levels, that includes headaches. The hormone mentioned above, oxytocin, will increase the bodies natural pain hormones, endorphins which decreases our bodies percieved pain levels. It also helps to decrease the pain associated with PMS.
Lower your chances of prostate cancer and start now. Men who orgasmed five or more times weekly or 21 or more times monthly during there 20’s showed a lower risk of developing cancer in their 50’s and beyond. One interesting finding was that the number of partners had no bearing on the final results, so this isn’t an excuse to be sleeping around.
Women can strengthen their pelvic floor. Why and how? Well strengthening your pelvic floor will add more stability to your “core” if you ever hear that word for workouts and it will also strengthen the muscles that control your bladder and decrease the risk of incontinence later in life..”or peeing your pants”. The idea is to do Kegel exerises during intercourse. So you would act like you were holding in urine and then release after 3 to 5 seconds and repeat. Call it something to do if you get bored during sex.
Sex can be used as a sleep aid. When humans orgasm they release oxytocin, mentioned above, which helps to calm the body and mind. The effects of an orgasm have been equaled to taking a Valium for sleep or stress release.
So hopefully this will give you some insight and help you get more healthy via sex, which I don’t know many people who have a problem with that work out.
