Director Stephen Sommers (The Mummy, Van Helsing) adapts the beloved Hasbro G.I. Joe toy line with this Paramount Pictures production that pits the Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity against the evil forces of the organization known as Cobra. Dennis Quaid and Channing Tatum star as General Hawk and Duke Hauser, respectively, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marlon Wayans leading the rest of the cast, including Sienna Miller, Ray Park, Rachel Nichols, Christopher Eccleston, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Saïd Taghmaoui, and Asian film star Lee Byung-hun.
Wanted to see this one and heard a lot of good things about it. I read that it could be even better than Transformers 2. I don’t think I can say that it was or wasn’t better than Transformers as it really wasn’t the same type of movie to me. Definitely ranks up there with it though.
So basically you have the bad guys trying to steal and set off these nanite nukes on different cities around the world. The good guys try to stop them throughout the film. Pretty simple plot line. Real simple plot but TONS of action throughout the film, which made up for the lack of plot. I really enjoyed this film. Something that I found HILARIOUS though was that Stephen Sommers directed the film…he also directed The Mummy (as mentioned in the synopsis). This film had Brendan Frasier in it, the guy who actually played the mummy in the movie (zoltan) and the annoying guy in the fez that was the mummies “sidekick” in the film (he was the guy that was in the bunker with Rex, had quite a bit of make up on but I recognized his voice). Talk about recycling actors.
The visual effects are what makes this movie. They were simply amazing. A lot was true to the toys as well. I could remember seeing something in the movie and was like, “ha I used to have that toy”, probably still do actually in storage. Almost thought this was a Michael Bay movie as there seemed to be some sort of explosin about every 5 minutes. This movie was non-stop action and very entertaining.
Overall, I’ll rank this one a 3.5/4*. Solely on the action and the technology that was presented in the film. Some of the acting was subpar in my opinion. I would definitely recommend anyone to go see this at the theatre as it was just awesome.
Until next time mofo’s…see you at the movies!
