On April 21, 2009 the debut album for the Australian group Empire Of The Sun will be released in the US. This album has garnered mixed reviews from a variety of different critics, but the charts do not lie. Initially released in October of 2008, Walking On A Dream reached #6 and achieved Platinum status in the land down under. In the simplest terms, Empire can be compared to MGMT. However, upon peeling behind the layers, they present a very unique and fun approach to their sound. Many tracks could easily be considered as Indie Europop, and they pull it off.
The album contains 10 tracks and comes in under 45 minutes. It is a rather fast paced album for the first few songs, then more Indie elements surface during the middle and slow the tempo. Building toward a strong close, Tiger By My Side makes a convincing case. The keyboard work is awesome, evoking reminiscient thoughts of Flock of Seagulls. The album art and video for Walking On A Dream are certainly “glam”.
Overall this album earns a 4/5 for enough originality and awesome album art. A very fun listen, and optimism for the sophomore release should there ever be one. Standout tracks include Standing On The Shore, Walking On A Dream, We Are The People, and Country.
