Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, Bear Hands is coming to town July 3rd at Radio Radio. They are touring in support of their second album, Distraction, which was released on February 18th. The first single off the album is “Giants”.
I first heard Bear Hands on a compilation playlist published by Pitchfork several years ago. The song “What A Drag” from their first album Burning Bush Supper Club made an impression and I liked what I heard. Self-described as “post-punk indie” (whatever that means), their debut album is up-beat and precise with airy, pulsating songs. Slower tracks with a tender, dream-like feel also populate the release for a complete and well-rounded sound. Bands that alternate between the fast and slow have always appealed to me.
The band’s newest album, Distraction, is a continuation of what worked in the first album. The production is a little tighter, and the sound might drift slightly more towards post-punk-indie-pop, but with positive effect. Favorites of mine from Distraction include “Giants”, “Bone Digger”, “Vile Iowa”, “Peacekeeper” and “Sleeping on the Floor”. Study up on those and you’ll be well-prepared for this Thursday.
